Kenya’s president, Uhuru Kenyatta has unveiled a new global environmental award to be known as the Amani and Mazingira Awards.
President Kenyatta announced the creation of the award which will be sponsored by the government of Kenya during the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP).
According to him, the bi-annual award will be presented to individuals and institutions that will be in the forefront in championing environmental sustainability and peace.

Kenyatta explained that it will be accompanied by a monetary award of USD 20,000, adding that the first awardee will be announced on the 1st of June of 2022 in celebration of Kenya’s Madaraka (Republic) Day.
The president also commended UNEP for its exemplary work in spearheading global environmental issues.
Other leaders who graced the occasion were Nigeria’s President Muhammad Buhari, Prime Minister of the Central African Republic Felix Moloua, President of Botswana Mokgweetsi Masisi and the Executive Director of UNEP Inger Andersen amongst others.
