The Abuja Chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Environmental Engineers (NIEE) has called for effective environmental management to stop the spread of dangerous diseases emanating from environmental hazards.

The call was made on Tuesday at the 2022 Valerie Agberagba Clean, Renewable and Energy Efficiency Competition (CREEC) and Public Lecture in Abuja by Mrs Lynda Elesa, Chairman of the NIEE, Abuja branch.

Elesa, who will step down as NIEE chairman this week as her tenure expires, said the engineers had gathered about 12 schools in the Federal Capital Territory for environmental competition.

According to her, the competition’s main goal is to educate kids about the value of cleanliness, and one of the activities is to pay tribute to CREEC.

The programme’s goal, according to her, is to advance the ideas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics while also encouraging the next generation to use their imaginations and abilities to harness renewable energy.

She noted that the programme will promote environmental sustainability in the nation as well as increase energy efficiency.

In his lecture on โ€œInnovations for Environmental Sustainability in Nigeria,โ€ Former Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority, Mr Umar Jibrin, captured all aspects of environmental challenges in the country and proffered solutions.

According to Jibrin, environmental degradation has been a global problem, and a lot has to be done to tackle the challenges.

In his words, โ€œThe lecture captured all the matters of flooding, solid waste management challenges, issues on lack of adequate water supply which has been taken care of.

โ€œWe need to actualise solid waste management and other challenges. This can only be possible if other private sectors can join to ensure that we tackle the issues.โ€

While noting that innovation was a crucial factor in the growth and modernization of enterprises and technologies, the National Chairman of the NIEE, Mr Sesan Odukoya said the Valerie Agberagba initiative was inspired by environmental challenges
