COP27: Climate negotiations in disarray as EU rejects Egypt’s proposal

The UN climate negotiations collapsed on Saturday as the European Union rejected a proposal by the host nation Egypt for lacking ambition on emissions cuts, warning that it would rather leave with no deal than a bad one.

Recall that the goal of the COP27, which has been taking place in Egypt for two weeks, is to advance climate change action while the globe deals with an increasing number of weather extremes.

The discussions, however, have stalled over demands that wealthier polluters provide “loss and damage” funds for nations hit by climate calamities as well as over levels of ambition in combating global warming.

Frans Timmermans, vice president of the European Commission, stated that the EU was prepared to end the discussions altogether and would rather have no outcome than a terrible one.

However, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry defended his proposal and said he remained optimistic about a “breakthrough.”

Story was adapted from The Guardian.
