As part of a programme to combat climate change, United States Vice President Kamala Harris revealed on Saturday that the US will assist Thailand in developing nuclear power through a new class of small reactors.
Thailand does not have nuclear power because of a change in public opinion on the subject following the Fukushima tragedy in Japan in 2011.
The help, according to the White House, is a part of the Net Zero World Initiative, a project that was introduced at the Glasgow climate summit last year and involves collaboration between the US government, the private sector, and philanthropy to advance renewable energy.
The reactors, which will have the “highest standards of safety, security, and nonproliferation” and boast a lower land footprint than conventional nuclear plants, will be deployed with the help of US experts working with Thailand, according to a White House statement.
The White House did not provide a deadline but stated that it will aid Thailand, a country that is very sensitive to climate change, in achieving its objective of becoming carbon neutral by the year 2065.
