Environment Canada, the department of the Government of Canada responsible for coordinating environmental policies and programs, as well as preserving and enhancing the natural environment and renewable resources, has issued a travel advisory for many Ontario communities because multiple snow squalls are anticipated to last into the weekend.

In Georgian Bay areas like Owen Sound, where 50 to 80 centimetres of snow were anticipated to fall by late Sunday, and Parry Sound/Muskoka, where 10 to 20 centimetres of snow were anticipated, the government department issued morning advisories about severe weather that was either occurring or impending.

The agency also warned against visiting the Lake Nipissing communities of North Bay and West Nipissing, where 25 to 50 centimetres of snow are predicted by Sunday morning.

Belleville, Brockville, Kingston, and the Niagara region were among the communities along Lake Ontario warned to prepare for 10 to 30 centimetres of snow through the evening or into Sunday morning.

Snow squalls were also predicted to dump 20 to 30 cm of snow close to the Simcoe community on Lake Erie.

According to Environment Canada, snow squalls can quickly transform circumstances from clear sky to heavy snowfall. It recommended drivers pack an emergency kit and a mobile phone in case they had to travel due to worsening road conditions.
