As Kenya continues to experience one of its worst droughts in forty years, the Woman Representative for Kirinyaga County, Jane Njeri Maina, has urged Kenyans, especially farmers, to embrace climate-resistant, sustainable farming methods.
Maina made the call on Sunday during the distribution of food items to families affected by drought in South Ngariama in Mwea.
While praising the government’s decision to legalize GMO foods again after a ten-year ban, Maina said that Kenya could use GMO crops as a substitute to fight famine caused by the present drought.

The lawmaker also emphasized the importance of civic education in educating Kenyans about the safety of GMO foods.
According to her, there is no reason for Kenyans to worry about their health because enough scientific evidence has shown that GMO foods are safe for consumption.
In her words, “A time has come when we need to embrace the use of GMOs, we have no option. The seasonal rains are now unpredictable and no longer consistent as they used to be.
“Extensive research has been carried out on the foods and experts tell us that they are safe. GMOs can be compared to the medicine we take which has a healing effect yet we don’t know how it’s manufactured. The time is now when we need to take a bold step of faith.”
