Women bemoan pains caused by climate change

Women in Akwa Ibom State have expressed sadness over the extent of suffering occasioned by climate change.

At a one-day town hall on climate change adaptation and mitigation sponsored by the non-governmental organization (NGO), Kebetkache Women Development and Resource Centre, the women also expressed fears over their fertility.

Speaking during the meeting, Obonganwan Emem Okon, the NGO’s executive director said that climate change has inflicted various environmental and health catastrophes on women across communities in the state.

Among the repercussions of climate change he mentioned were; loss of food security, natural disasters, disappearing coastlines, human migration, resource depletion, and a shortage of clean, accessible water.

Speaking further, he said, “On gender and climate change, women are more negatively impacted as they make up majority of the world’s poor. “Women suffer from shortages in household water consumption. Women in rural areas drink from polluted water.
