President Muhammadu Buhari has said that he remains devoted to tackling the impacts of climate change by investing in renewable energy.
The president made this known at the official inauguration of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto 2.0MWp Solar Hybrid project which is funded by the federal government and implemented by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) under the Energising Education Programme anchored by the Green Bond.
Speaking during the event, Buhari said that the project would offer communities, teaching hospitals, and colleges clean, secure, and economical electricity, adding that It was the sixth of its sort under Phase I, according to President Buhari, who was represented by Minister of Police Affairs Muhammadu Maigari Dingyadi.
He said: “It is in fulfilment of our strategic drive using modern technology to address the issue of climate change to reduce by 20 per cent the carbon emissions in order to limit the harmful effect of same to the environment and society.

He maintained that the project will enable a safe and conducive learning environment on university campuses, secure as well support the drive for girl child education and improve the quality of healthcare services.
According to the president, the project, which was conceived through an innovative financing mechanism to fund the implementation of the climate change project will further support and reinforce important hints towards the nation’s sustainable economic progress.
Also speaking during the event, Minister of Power, Abubakar Aliyu said that the ministry conceived the programme idea being implemented by the REA to provide clean, safe, sustainable and affordable electricity to the APC university environment.
The Minister listed a number of other initiatives that had been carried out by the federal government and supervised by different ministers, including the most recent at UDUS.
“They are the 60kWp Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Mini-grid at Kuchi Community in Lapai, Niger State; the 150kWp Off-Grid/On-Grid Renewable Energy (Solar) Micro Utility at Tella Community in Gassol, Taraba State; the Rural electrification Grid Extension at Emekutu, Ikebe and Ojagbo communities in Ankpa, Kogi; the Rural Electrification Grid Extension at Isanlu, Ayetoro Gbede, Augu-Kura, Araromi and Olujumo, communities in Kogi and the 100kWp Solar PV Hybrid Mini-Grid in Atekombo, Ushongo in Benue State,” he explained.
