The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) and the North-East Development Commission (NEDC) have partnered on renewable energy and waste management in North East states as part of efforts to tackle the impact of climate change.
Speaking during a courtesy visit to NEDC’s liaison office in Abuja, the deputy regional director of UNOPS, Dalila Goncalves, said that besides the completion of two oxygen plants in partnership with the Commission, it has also signed an engagement with Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) to procure anti-malaria medicines as part of efforts to eradicate the menace.
“We have received very good feedback on our collaboration so far, and we are really very pleased and very grateful for it,” she said.

Earlier, the chief executive officer of NEDC, Mohammed Alkali reassured UNOPS of its support and partnerships, adding that one of the major roles of the Commission was to create associations and relationships among local and international organisations to assist in carrying out its constitutional duty.
Alkali stated that with the launching of the North East Stabilisation and Development Master Plan (NESDMP) which is almost ready, economic activities will be revived in the region even as the partnership through its multiplier effect has provided direct and indirect employment to millions of people in the region.
