Extinction Rebellion, an environmental movement has announced that it would cease its iconic transport network blockades in the United Kingdom and host a significant protest against government policies in April.

The activist network, which was established in the U.K. in 2018, frequently engages in civil disobedience to criticize what it sees as the government’s inaction on climate change.

In order to disrupt commuters, activists were well-known for obstructing train tracks, airports, and roadways. They blockaded the renowned Tower Bridge in London at the end of August 2022.

“As we ring in the new year, we make a controversial resolution to temporarily shift away from public disruption as a primary tactic,” the group said in a statement.

“This year, we prioritize attendance over arrest and relationships over roadblocks, as we stand together and become impossible to ignore,” it added.

While acknowledging “the power of disruption to raise the alarm,” the activists said that their organization will now concentrate on disrupting “the abuse of power and imbalance” by pressing political officials to stop using fossil fuels.

The group is calling for 100,000 people to demonstrate outside the U.K. parliament in London on April 21.
