Two climate activists have spray-painted prime minister Elisabeth Borne office’s entrance in retaliation for what they referred to as climate crimes.

The facade of the Hotel Matignon was spray-painted by members of the campaign group Derniere Renovation (Last Renovation), who were wearing t-shirts that read “Who is guilty?”

Derniere Renovation said in a statement that the state had fallen short of its pledges to combat climate change.

Recall that the state was fined €10 million (£8.8 million) last year by France’s top administrative court for failing to improve the air quality in numerous major cities. In 2021, they received the same fine for the same offence.

In order to meet European standards, the same court mandated that the government reduce levels of nitrogen dioxide and fine particles in more than a dozen zones in 2017.
