In response to a week of storms that killed 12 people in the state of California, President Joe Biden has approved the declaration of an emergency for the state.

Biden noted that by declaring an emergency, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) would be given the go-ahead to coordinate disaster relief efforts and mobilize emergency resources.

In the previous ten days, extreme weather brought about tremendous wind gusts that overturned vehicles, inundated small villages along the coast of northern California, and stirred up a storm surge that swept away a pier in Santa Cruz.

Governor of California, Gavin Newsom, had on Sunday announced that he would ask the Biden administration to declare a federal emergency to support California’s ongoing storm response.

According to Newsom, the state needed support amid an unrelenting wave of brutal storms that left hundreds of thousands of Californians without power.
