The Treasury Secretary of the United States, Janet Yellen has called for swift action to enhance long-term food security in Africa and throughout the world while modifying agricultural methods and technologies to account for climate change.

Yellen made the call on Tuesday after hearing from a woman beekeeper and other farmers in a rural Zambian community whose work was supported by a U.S.-backed project.

The project, which is a part of the larger Green Climate Fund, assists small-scale farmers in 155 villages in Zambia in increasing food production and reducing the effects of climate change.

Yellen said, “This project shows how our countries can partner to address two of the most critical issues facing Zambia and the world: food security and climate adaptation.”

She also met with the Twalumbu Savings Group, which helps its member’s pool resources to invest in livestock, equipment and seeds and feed, which in turn helps them expand their food production and revenues.

Member Faustina Piri hailed Yellen’s visit to the remote area as a big achievement, noting that the savings club was making “a big difference” in improving the lives of all those involved.
