The Federal Government of Nigeria has called for more foreign support for climate change action in order to strengthen the economy of the nation.
The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, made the call during the inauguration of the Initiative for Climate Action Transparency (ICAT) Project Steering Committee and commissioning of the Project Consultants on Tuesday, in Abuja.
According to a statement signed by Olajide Osundun, Director of Press and Public Relations in the ministry, the minister said that the support was imperative as it affected the oil and gas, “which is the mainstay of the country’s economy’’.

He said this would lift people out of poverty, create new jobs and move away from old habits that were not technologically dependent.
Ngige emphasized that labour is crucial to Nigeria’s ability to fulfil its international obligations to combat climate change, particularly the Paris Agreement and the implementation of its energy transformation strategy.
The minister stated that efforts are being made around the world to reduce hydrocarbon pollution and that his ministry has taken the step to formalize its desire to participate in these efforts.
