Scientists berate Israel’s environment minister for meeting with climate deniers

A group of climate scientists have berated the Israeli Environmental Protection Minister Idit Silman for holding a meeting with members of the so-called Rational Environmentalism Forum, a group that opposes the general scientific view that humans are responsible for climate change.

Econaipus had earlier reported that Silman met with the group of climate change sceptics on Thursday and was presented with information claiming Israel’s climate-related activity is meaningless, as the group expressed doubt over human involvement in causing climate change, and was sceptical about its severity.

On Monday, a not-for-profit group of scientists known as Little, Big Science wrote to the minister that even though it was crucial to listen to different views, the Rational Environmentalism Forum represented a “negligible minority” and that most of its members were not climate scientists.

The organization, Little, Big Science, which is made up of about 50 scientists from various fields and was created to help the general public understand science, noted that the vast majority of scientists in the world, many of whom were affiliated with the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change were certain that global warming was a phenomenon caused by humans.

The letter added that groups like the Rational Environmentalism Forum “spread false information that requires a lot of effort and resources to eliminate,” urging the minister to restrict her consultations to “professionals with relevant expertise in the field in question.”
