Malawi’s President urges nations to replicate Scotland’s climate fund initiative

The President of Malawi, Lazarus Chakwera, has said that a Scottish fund for developing nations affected by climate change should serve as a model for the entire globe.

In 2021, the Scottish government declared that it would start funding so-called “loss and damage” projects.

At the UN climate summit in Egypt last year, world leaders finally agreed to follow Scotland’s example.

The modest Scottish fund, according to Chakwera, has already had a big impact on six villages.

He said everyone else should follow Scotland’s lead and do what it was already doing.

The President emphasized that it was incorrect to refer to the funds as help and that they should instead be viewed as nations sharing in the burden of combating climate change.

According to Chakwera, vulnerable countries like Malawi would feel better supported if the Scottish model was replicated by other countries.

In his words, “This fight belongs to all of us and I believe that this example will serve as a prototype of what could happen.”
