The Group President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), Dr Akinwunmi Adesina, has called for swift action to lessen the world’s reliance on fossil fuels and maximize Africa’s renewable energy sources.

Adesina made the call at the Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue, hosted by the German Federal Government.

The AfDB boss highlighted Africa’s achievements and its tremendous potential to lead the world in sustainable development but also emphasized the major energy issues that millions of Africans still faced.

He noted that a survey from 2022 found that 970 million people lacked access to clean energy for cooking, and at least 600 million people did not have access to electricity.

According to Adesina, to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Seven of affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all, Africa must connect 90 million people annually to electricity by 2030.

He added that the continent must also shift 130 million people from dirty cooking fuels yearly.
