Gov Diri berates FG for not taking actions to avert flood

Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has berated the Federal Government over what he described as the issuance of flood warnings without taking the prerequisite steps to avert it.

Diri stated this while playing host to the leadership of the coastal erosion-ravaged Obogoro community in Yenagoa LGA, who came on a courtesy visit to the Government House.

He bemoaned the enormous costs associated with addressing flood, erosion, and other environmental concerns, which governments cannot manage separately.

According to the governor, most communities in the state have been affected by constant flooding and erosion.

He noted that in an effort to combat erosion and floods, his administration established a flood and erosion control agency tasked with giving comprehensive solutions to environmental problems.

In his words, “Erosion affects almost all communities in Bayelsa. That is why we believe this is not a state government problem alone.

“The Federal Government has to come in to play key roles. Federal Government merely issuing warnings or alerts to states is not enough; you know we do not have the resources to tackle this issue. We need the federal and international agencies to support us.”
