A United Nations (UN) report shows that under governments’ current climate plans, the world will pump out enough greenhouse gas in the next ten years to take global warming above 1.5C above pre-industrial levels.
Recall that the IPCC’s scientists stated in 2018 that the world cannot produce more carbon dioxide than 500 gigatonnes in order to have a 50% probability of keeping global warming to the target of 1.5C.

But according to a recent report to countries from the UN climate change authority, even if states reach their present climate targets (NDCs), they will still create around 430 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide by 2030.
Just 70 gigatonnes are remaining until after 2030. That will be consumed in just two years if things continue as they are.
