The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has advised Lagos residents to exercise extreme caution to prevent risks as a result of Thursday’s intense downpour.

Territorial Coordinator (NEMA) Lagos, Ibrahim Farinloye, gave the advice in a statement in Lagos on Thursday.

Farinloye advised school proprietors and teachers to keep the children under their custody for 30 minutes after rainfall before releasing them.

In his words, “This is to safeguard the children from playing in the rainwater on their way home.

“After the flash flooding, which will not last beyond 30 minutes, it will be safe for the children to find their way home.”

He also urged drivers to exercise patience as the highways have been blocked and flooded.

“People should avoid taking refuge in makeshift shelters as the place can be washed off by floods.

“The agency and other stakeholders are on the highways to monitor and respond to any distress situation that may arise,” he said.

It was learned that the major road in the Ogba area of the state was heavily flooded on Thursday.

A correspondent who monitored the flood said that residents were seen literally swimming through the flood on the tarred road.
