Two weeks after Eco-nai+ published a report on the poor waste management in Enugu, the state government has announced plans to reverse the undesirable trend and “restore the hitherto enviable sanitary condition of the city”.
The report looked at how delays in the evacuation of waste in Enugu State encourage indiscriminate waste disposal, its health implications, and how the practice impacts the environment.
In a public service announcement signed by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Information, Steve Oruruo on Wednesday, and obtained by Eco-Nai+, the state frowned at what it described as “the declining state of the cleanliness of the Enugu City”.

It announced an upward review of the terms of waste evacuation contracts to compensate for the high operating cost occasioned by
spike in the cost of diesel, vehicle maintenance and labour.
This, it said, was intended to improve the capacity of the Waste Evacuation Contractors to render “top-notch service”.
“Consequently, the Waste Evacuation Contractors have been charged to urgently reverse the undesirable trend and restore the hitherto sanitary condition of the city”, the government said.
It assured the people of Enugu State that a huge improvement in the cleanliness of the city would be witnessed “shortly”.
