Brazil: Floods, landslides kill 3 in Santa Catarina

At least three people have been confirmed killed after flooding and landslides hit Santa Catarina, one of the states in Southern Brazil.

The state government had reported that 26 municipalities had suffered losses as a result of the recent storms. THe cities of Rio Negrinho and Ascurra also declared a states of emergency.

At least 80 people are reported to have been displaced as a result of the heavy rains. While approximately 60 structures and buildings were damaged.

Sniffer dogs are being used by rescue teams to look for two people who are still missing after a landslide in Rodeio. On the 19th of January, three bodies were recovered from the site.

While an estimated 190 people have been displaced, municipal authorities said that they have established an emergency shelter.

Rodeio recorded 173.1 mm of rain in 12 hours from early 18 January 2023 to early 18 January 2023.

State Governor Jorginho Mello arrived by helicopter but was unable to land near the site due to poor weather. Around 5,000 customers in Rodeio and 3,200 in Ascurra were without power.
