To lessen the effects of climate change, Dr Teshome Nkrumah, the Deputy High Commissioner of Canada to Nigeria, has urged for more sustainable environmental protection.
Nkrumah made the announcement while delivering the keynote address at a dinner and awards ceremony on Saturday in Lagos to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the founding of the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF).
The theme of the event was “Only One Earth”.
Despite the fact that “climate change is and will be for a while the defining catastrophe of our time,” Nkrumah remained confident that it could be controlled with shared responsibility on the efforts of citizens and governments.
He praised the NCF for its 40 years of steadfastly leading the fight for environmental preservation, biodiversity, and sustainability.
“Climate change will nonetheless require a fundamental transformation in all aspects of society.
“How we grow food, use land, transport goods, and power our economies.
“Many nature-based solutions can help to achieve the decarbonisation of our economies”, Nkrumah said.

Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu also spoke, expressing happiness that Chief Lawal Edu, of blessed memory, who founded the NCF, was a notable son of the state.
Mr Mobolaji Ogunlende, Special Adviser on Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Relations, represented Sanwo-Olu.
The death of Edu did not result in the demise of his vision for the preservation of nature, the safeguarding of biodiversity, and environmental sustainability, according to Sanwo-Olu.
He said that Edu gathered all deserving friends and colleagues who could carry on the good work for 40 years.
He claimed that the “Walk for Nature” project, which had been ongoing for more than 15 years, was one of the long-lasting collaborations between the state government and the NCF.
One of the highlights of the event was the presentation of awards: Special Recognition award, award of dedicated service, long service award and posthumous award.
The Founder of the NCF, the Late Chief Lawal Edu, among others, got the foundation’s posthumous award.
Chief Emeka Anyaoku (MFR), a former Secretary-General of the Commonwealth and General Theophilus Danjuma (retd) GCON, got the special recognition award.
