CCC says Northern Ireland needs radical action to meet net zero target

The Climate Change Committee (CCC) has said that Northern Ireland would fall far short of its 2050 net zero emissions target unless “radical action” is taken.

According to the CCC, actions like a one-third decrease in cattle and an increase in electric vehicles within the next ten years won’t be sufficient.

In a report, the CCC proposed an alternative strategy to cut 83% of emissions but noted that even this would be “extremely challenging”.

The CCC suggests a different approach in a report, but even this would be “very problematic” because it would only reduce emissions by 83%.

In addition to providing recommendations to the government regarding emissions objectives, the committee also updates Parliament on the status of efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

According to its most recent advice, neither Northern Ireland’s interim nor net-zero targets will be met due to the lack of a sufficiently ambitious policy.
