Climate activists threaten ‘unprecedented’ disobedience in UK

Ahead of what is expected to be the UK’s largest-ever climate protest, Extinction Rebellion, a group of climate activists, on Tuesday, threatened the government with “unprecedented” civil disobedience unless it stops supporting the fossil fuel industry.

A coalition of more than 40 environmental organizations, including XR and Greenpeace, demanded that ministers cease approving new oil, coal, and gas project licenses and permissions and create urgent citizens’ assemblies so that the people can decide how to end the fossil fuel era quickly and fairly.

30,000 people are expected to attend the four-day climate demonstration, which will involve around 200 environmental and social justice groups, according to XR, the event organizer.

The ultimatum was triggered by the government’s admission last month that its new net zero strategies will fall short of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by enough to meet its own targets, which has generated doubts about the UK’s commitment to combating climate change.
