Climate Change: Coalition calls for establishment of loss and damage fund

A coalition under the aegis of the Global Climate and Health Alliance has urged nations to establish a Loss and Damage fund under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

More than 130 organizations from around the world are members of the coalition which is dedicated to combating climate change and preserving public health.

While Canada, the European Union (EU), and the United States (US) are pressing for an additional two years to review the situation, the G77 and China are eager to get an agreement on the creation of a fund as COP27 ends on Friday.

The coalition’s executive director, Jeni Miller, issued a warning that it would be unacceptable to wait two years to decide whether or not to establish a specific Loss and Damage fund.

Miller emphasized the crisis’s seriousness and the hardships lower-income nations have already experienced in receiving funding to mitigate the effects of climate change.

The director stated that governments of developed/high-income nations must prioritize the creation of the Loss and Damage fund to aid lower-income countries before COP27 comes to an end.

In her words, “Vulnerable and impacted countries desperately need these funds to compensate for the impacts on people’s health and wellbeing, as they respond to climate crises, not of their making.”
