Environmental science specialists are advocating for Climate Justice to maintain a sustainable environment for growth and development as part of efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change in Africa.
They made their stance known at the 2022 Science Conference in Kaduna, Nigeria which was organised by the Africa Institute for Waste Management and Environmental Studies and Africa Climate Reporters.
Dr Abubakar Shafiu, an environmental science expert who emphasized the need for widespread climate justice sensitization, claimed that the term ‘climate justice’ refers to a strategy for promoting transformational justice to overcome power imbalances in the international community.

According to him, attaining climate adaptation and mitigation is essential to allowing vulnerable nations like Nigeria and other African nations to withstand the shock of climate catastrophes like flooding, among other things.
Shafiu contends that strong action from industrialized nations is required to protect the environment in order to attain low carbon emissions and resilience.
The climate expert stated that to provide an effective and scientific response to climate change, the emphasis must also be placed on restorative justice and the restoration of integrity to mother Earth and her inhabitants.
He also emphasized the need to re-engineer the climate finance architecture to guarantee that it provides support for adaptation and mitigation because the most vulnerable nations are not receiving climate finance.
On his part, Dr Suleiman Tanko, president of the Africa Institute for Waste Management and Environmental Studies, emphasized the importance of good waste management and reaffirmed the institute’s commitment to doing in-depth research on waste recycling to lessen the impact of the threat.
Also speaking, Dr Nurudeen Bello, director of Africa Climate Reporters, said the science conference, which was themed “Impact of Climate Change on Eco-Environment,” was intended to raise awareness among climate reporters of the importance of stepping up their coverage of environmental issues in order to advance sustainable development and progress.
