The climate council of Australia has warned that Australia is in for a dreadful summer of extreme weather occurrences.

A report released on Monday by the council and Emergency Leaders for Climate Action (ELCA) had shown that the top threats confronting Australians this summer are floods, cyclones, and outbreaks of the mosquito-borne Japanese encephalitis virus.

According to the report, climate change has made Australia’s disaster preparation effective, and it urges increased financing for resilience and the creation of a national disaster strategy.

Lesley Hughes, lead climate scientist and author of the report, was quoted saying that there is nothing natural about these disasters, adding that they are being unleashed on Australians by decades of dependence on fossil fuels.

“These same companies enjoy billions in public subsidies. It’s about time we ended fossil fuel subsidies and used the savings to create a climate disaster fund so we can help communities deal with the consequences of disasters that get worse and worse,”he said.

Story was adapted from NNN.
