The 30th UN Climate Change Conference is expected to open in Belém, Brazil this Thursday where countries are expected to submit updated climate action plans through 2035. As a key player in global climate governance, China is expected to present its green vision and low-carbon initiatives at this year’s meeting.
2025 is a pivotal year for all Paris Agreement signatories to submit their updated climate plans.
These plans, known as Nationally Determined Contributions, or NDCs, outline how each country intends to reduce emissions and take climate action over the next decade.
China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment has emphasised its commitment to active participation in global climate governance.
XIA YINGXIAN Director-General, Department of Climate Change, China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment “We hope this conference will send a clear and positive signal – that collective climate action must not stall, that the trend toward green and low-carbon development is irreversible, that international cooperation is indispensable, and that multilateralism must remain firm.”
The NDCs will be reviewed at this year’s conference – a critical step to keep global warming within 1.5 degrees Celsius.
President Xi Jinping recently announced that by 2035, China will reduce net emissions by seven to ten per cent from peak levels, raise the share of non-fossil energy to over 30 per cent, as well as expand wind and solar capacity to 3,600 gigawatts.
XI JINPING, Chinese President “Let’s all step up our actions to realise the beautiful vision of harmony between man and nature, and preserve planet Earth – the place we call home.”
Additional objectives include increasing forest coverage, promoting new energy vehicles as the mainstream choice, enhancing the carbon market, and fostering a climate-resilient society.
XIA YINGXIAN Director-General, Department of Climate, China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment “Our calculations show that by 2035, China’s net greenhouse gas emissions will drop by more than one billion tons from the peak level. That’s a reduction far greater than that achieved by developed economies at comparable stages. This demonstrates unprecedented ambition and strength.”
The ministry says China stands ready to work with the international community to help build a clean and beautiful world.
SUN TIANYUAN Beijing “China’s new climate goals signal a stronger push toward a greener future. The message is loud and clear: tackling climate change requires real action for today and for generations to come. Sun Tianyuan, CGTN, Beijing.”
