The Centre for Climate Change and Development (CCCD) has urged young people to get involved in climate change initiatives.
This was stated by the organization’s director, Prof. Chukwumerije Okereke, as he recognized the top three finishers in the recently finished second national essay contest, “Climate Change and Nigeria’s Economic Development: A Letter to my Incoming President.”
During an award ceremony event hosted by the centre in partnership with the Sustainable Development Center, the candidates whose essays were chosen as the best after careful review and assessment by an impartial panel of judges received N200,000, N150,000, and N100,000.

The winners are, Israel Oghenefiro Orere, an undergraduate student of Petroleum Engineering at the University of Lagos, James Afomare Owan, an Engineering graduate of Lagos State University and Promise Okwuchukwu an undergraduate of Law at the University of Nigeria Nsukka, Enugu State.
Okeke said, “Climate change is not just an environmental problem but a national economic development problem, which is the reason for the second national essay competition, this is also to encourage Nigerian youths to participate more.
The Director General, the National Council on Climate Change, Dr. Salisu Dahiru, who was represented by Michael Ivenso, Head of Directorate of Energy, Infrastructure and Transportation of the National Council on Climate Change Commission, said Nigeria has made several bold commitments on climate change.
