As they get ready for this year’s UN climate talks in Dubai, EU nations have decided to “systematically” demand a global phase-out of fossil fuels.
Priorities for the EU ahead of the Cop28 conference are outlined in a common policy on climate and energy diplomacy that was endorsed by the EU Council.
According to Alex Scott, who leads think tank E3G’s climate diplomacy work, The agreement formalizes the stance the EU took at the Cop27 meetings in Egypt, although there is still room for improvement.

The bloc was a member of an alliance of more than 80 nations that backed India’s proposal to expand Cop26’s trailblazing demand to phase down coal to other fossil fuels.
Egypt, however, chose not to incorporate the suggestion in the final draft due to objections from the oil and gas industry.
Discussions on the subject are expected to take centre stage at Cop28 in the United Arab Emirates, one of the biggest oil and gas producers in the world.
