The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has issued a flood alert in 198 LGAs across 29 states and the federal capital territory (FCT) between August 7 and 21.

Umar Ibrahim, who is the Director-General (DG) of the agency, issued the warning on Thursday, following rising river levels and persistent rainfall across the country. Ibrahim said that over 100 communities and key transportation routes could be severely impacted during the forecast period.

He said that the states expected to be affected include Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, FCT, Gombe, and Imo. Others are Jigawa, Kaduna, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe and Zamfara.

According to NIHSA DG, 832 communities fall within the projected flood impact zones. “Possible disruption of major transportation routes is anticipated,” Ibrahim said.

He noted that emergency response agencies have been advised to activate contingency plans, while residents in high-risk areas are urged to prepare for possible evacuation.

The DG also encouraged Nigerians to stay updated through the NIHSA weekly forecasts and flood dashboard, available on its website and official social media pages.

Ibrahim said that the alert is part of its broader effort to minimise the impact of seasonal flooding, which has continued to displace communities and destroy infrastructure nationwide.
