A leading Fast-Moving Consumer Good (FMCG), Flour Mills of Nigeria Plc (FMN), has joined the Africa Business Leaders Coalition (ABLC) in the fight against climate change, becoming the first FMCG company to do so.

The Group Managing Director of FMN, Mr Boye Olusanya, who disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday in Lagos, said that the move was part of the company’s deliberate measures to entrench climate change across its business operations.

He explained that African Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) are bringing their holistic perspectives to the global discussion on climate change through the ABLC, a coalition dedicated to ambitious climate action and sustainable development.

According to reports, the ABLC is made up of the CEOs of 55 African businesses, representing more than $150 billion in annual revenue and more than 900,000 employees in 50 different African nations.

Olusanya explained the important pledges made by the ABLC to carry out the goals of the Paris Agreement and promote Africa’s transformation into a prosperous continent with possibilities for future generations.

He said that the company was aware of the climate emergency and its disproportionate effects on Africa’s agricultural systems and food security, adding that it necessitates the need for increased action from all stakeholders to address the effects of climate change.

“Also, as a responsible corporation with a significant footprint in the food and agro-allied value chain, the group believes that the private sector has a critical role to play in addressing climate change impacts,” he said. “FMN is, therefore, committed to building more sustainable and resilient agricultural systems to reduce the adverse impact of climate change on food security”.

Speaking further, he said, “for FMN, membership of the ABLC is significant because climate action is critical to addressing the key issues facing the African continent such as food insecurity, water scarcity, and displacement of lives and livelihoods”.
