German activists seek urgent action against global warming

German climate activists on Wednesday sawed off the top of the famous Christmas tree in the heart of Berlin, calling for immediate action to combat global warming.

The 15-meter (49-feet) tree in front of the Brandenburg Gate was cut off at the tip by members of the Last Generation group using a lifting platform. They then rolled out a banner that read, “This is only the tip of the Christmas tree.”

Speaking to newsmen, one of the activists said: “So far in Germany, we have only seen the tip of the climate catastrophe,” and restated the group’s demands from the government to take stronger measures to protect the climate and prevent global warming from becoming worse.

In order to get media attention, members of the group taped their hands to well-known works of art in museums and even obstructed airport runways.

The German government is facing harsh criticism from climate campaigners for failing to take real action to keep global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit), instead choosing to continue investing in fossil fuel infrastructure and endangering the future of humanity.

Their top requests right now are a 100 km/h (62.14 mph) speed limit on German highways and the implementation of a €9 ($9.5) unlimited-travel national public transportation ticket.
