As part of efforts to raise the billions required to assist Pakistan to adapt to climate change after last year’s devastating floods, Germany has announced at an international conference it would donate 90 million dollars to the nation.
Announcing the pledge at the conference in Geneva, the State Secretary of Germany’s Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, Jochen Flasbarth said “This is a crisis that Pakistan cannot overcome alone.’’
“We are sending a signal that will hopefully have an effect,” he added.

The money from Berlin would be used to fund initiatives like the development of drainage systems and rainfall retention basins.
Pakistan’s rehabilitation is expected to cost 16 billion dollars, according to the UN. The Islamabad government sought to raise the other half of the amount on its own.
Germany has already committed 67 million euros to deal with the social effects of the flooding and rebuilding infrastructure last summer.
Governmental negotiations between Germany and Pakistan are scheduled for May, and it is anticipated that more funding will be available at those negotiations.
