Global warming: Expert warns against food wastes

David Terungwa, a climate change expert, has warned Nigerians against food waste throughout the yuletide, noting that the trash generated from such acts can accelerate climate change and global warming.

Terungwa, Team Lead for the Global Initiative for Food Security and Ecosystem Preservation (GIFSEP), issued the warning on Wednesday in Abuja while speaking to reporters about the effects of climate change on the environment.

Terungwa, who also serves as Citizens Climate International’s Africa Coordinator, noted that food wastes that end up in landfills produce more methane greenhouse gas than even carbon dioxide (CO2).

He said too many greenhouse gases, including methane, CO2, and chlorofluorocarbons, absorb infrared radiation and heat up the earth’s atmosphere, resulting in both global warming and climate change.

According to him, food wastes are a waste of both surface and groundwater resources, as agriculture uses 70% of the water consumed globally.

Terungwa added that wasting food had an adverse effect on the environment by causing global warming in addition to financial waste.

According to the expert, many food products have excessive packaging, and people are becoming more conscious that this packaging is bad for the environment and could end up in landfills.

Story was adapted from NAN.
