Following a snow and ice emergency, some schools across the United Kingdom have been compelled to close for a second consecutive day.

To protect the security of students and employees as they enter during daylight hours, hundreds of schools remained closed on Tuesday, while others chose to start later.

Sources say the Met Office has issued a yellow snow and ice warning for northern Scotland and north-east England from Tuesday night until noon on Thursday.

According to reports, Braemer, in Aberdeenshire, recorded the lowest minimum temperature since February 2021 and the lowest maximum in 12 years with a low of minus 17C and a high of minus 9.3C.

The five next coldest temperatures were all recorded in Scotland, including minus 13.1C at Balmoral.

Met Office spokesman, Oli Claydon, said that there would be heavy snow in some places again on Tuesday.

“Coming into force at midnight tonight all the way through to lunchtime on Thursday, (there is a) large snow and ice warning covering the North-East of England, the whole sort of northern portion of Scotland, as well as the Highlands and islands,’ Claydon said.

Story was adapted from Punch.
