Israel donates to climate change fight in local municipalities

Israel’s Ministry of Environmental Protection has given all local municipalities in the nation a total of about NIS 32 million to aid in developing climate crisis plans and finding measures to increase shade in public spaces.

Idit Silman, the new minister of environmental protection, noted that this marked the beginning of a new era.

According to Silman, the local municipalities are the ministry’s arm in the fight to protect the environment, hence the ministry took it as an obligation to strengthen local authorities and give them the resources they need.

“Through our support, local municipalities will help bring about significant change in the fight against climate change, and we will strengthen the relationship between them and the Environmental Protection Ministry,” Silman added.

The donation comes shortly after Tamar Zandberg, the previous minister, was replaced by Silman as minister of environmental protection when Israel’s new government was sworn in.

Additionally, Israel’s Energy Ministry has announced plans to establish a national energy storage research institute, to assist Israel’s transition to zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

This illustrates the rising worry among government authorities regarding the ongoing global climate change.
