Lawmaker blames climate change for water scarcity in Ebonyi communities

The House of Representatives member representing Afikpo-North and Afikpo-South Federal Constituency, Idu Igariwey has said that climate change is responsible for the scarcity of water in various communities in the constituency.

Igariwey stated this while handing over more than 20 units of modern water boreholes to the communities, adding that the gesture was to provide potable water to his constituents whose sources of natural water had drained because of the impacts of climate change.

He bemoaned the fact that recent industrial and economic activities had polluted the few remaining natural water sources in the area, leaving the locals more susceptible to diseases spread by contaminated water.

Igariwey added that some villages in the constituency’s steep topography had further made it difficult for residents to have easy access to drinking water.

He noted that each of the boreholes donated is powered by solar energy to ensure that people always have access to water without being restricted by power outages.

The lawmaker highlighted his intention to address the water issues in his constituency, saying that he wanted to make the constituency a benchmark for achieving Sustainable Development Goal number 6, which is focused on providing people with access to clean water and sanitation.

According to him, the communities that have already benefited from the water project include Unwana, Amukabi, Owutu-Edda, Amasiri, Mkpoghoro, Ozizza, Itim, Ohaisu, Ugwuegu Community, and Ekeukwu Market.

He urged other villages that haven’t yet been included in the water project to exercise patience, adding that he had included them in a later phase that will begin in the coming weeks.
