The Federal Government of Nigeria has restated its commitment to addressing the challenge of managing climate change.

Sadiya Umar Farouq, Nigeria’s Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development made this known at the 2022 National Migration Dialogue, which was held in Abuja in observance of International Migrants Day.

The event was organized by the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons in partnership with the International Organization for Migration.

Farouq, who was represented by the Deputy Director of Disaster Management in the Ministry, Abubakar Suleiman, stated that the government presently spends 9% of its GDP on initiatives that directly combat climate change.

The minister pointed out that Nigeria developed a comprehensive Electricity Transition Plan in 2021, becoming the first African nation to do so, with the goal of ensuring that everyone has access to energy by 2030.

Pledging that Nigeria would continue to take strong action to lessen the effects of climate change, the minister emphasized that in order to protect the future of the global environment, every nation must play a part because climate change is not an isolated phenomenon.

Story was adapted from VON.
