The Federal Government of Nigeria has said that it was deepening efforts to implement adaptation measures that will reduce the impact of climate change on vulnerable Nigerians.

The Minister of Aviation, Sen. Hadi Sirika who disclosed this on Tuesday, in Abuja during his keynote address at the presentation of 2023 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) and other Publications, noted that by consistently disseminating timely meteorological data, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) is aiding the adaptation efforts.

In his words, “The Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) is an essential early warning tool for planning against the effect of climate change and variability in all weather-sensitive sectors of the economy,”.“The information also helps in taking advantage of favourable climatic conditions to improve performance, especially in agriculture”.

Speaking further, he said, “the SCP provides vital meteorological information on temperature, rainfall pattern, the onset of the season, end of the season, length of season and their impacts on socio-economic activities in the country.”

According to the minister, Nigeria is playing its part in the international effort to battle climate change by adhering to the Paris Climate Change Agreement.

On his part, the Director-General of the NiMet, Prof. Mansur Matazu, stated that SCP offered a snapshot of some key climate indicators and their seasonal behaviour.

He noted that the NiMet produces the publication every year to carry out its responsibility of informing the federal, state and local governments of the nation with reliable, timely, and high-quality meteorological and climate information.
