Bayero University Kano (BUK) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with two private companies to accelerate alternative energy solutions in order to address the perennial challenge of acute electricity supply.
The partnership, led by the BUK Centre for Renewable Energy, would see waste management transformed into biogas energy, according to Prof. Sagir Adamu Abbas, Vice Chancellor of the university who was speaking during a press briefing held as part of activities marking the institution’s 36th and 37th combined convocation ceremonies, which will take place from February 7 to 11.
Abbas said that the initiative was one of the institution’s giant strides in result-oriented research and innovation.

The VC, who explained the Centre for Renewable Energy secured N1 billion intervention fund to develop alternative clean energy, added that the collaboration with biogas companies would reduce the cost of energy and generate revenue for the university.
He noted that the university had also attracted several interventions from government and international organisations, which include, $7.8 million won by the Centre for Dryland Agriculture through World Bank in 2014, and an additional $5 million won through the World Bank and the French Development Agency.
