Chairman of Climate Parliament Nigeria, Hon Samuel Onuigbo has assured that the National Assembly will pass laws to stop the spread of plastic pollution in Nigeria.

Onuigbo, a member of the House of Representatives, made this statement in Abuja at the unveiling and installation of recycling bins for plastic and aluminium in the National Assembly.

He pointed out that as legislators addressing climate change and promoting the movement towards a low-carbon Nigeria, Climate Parliament Nigeria made the decision to install recycling bins for plastic bottles and aluminium cans in the National Assembly as a symbolic act encouraging others to follow suit.

He stated that the goal was to create awareness of proper plastic and aluminium can waste disposal, the urgent need to preserve the environment from plastic and aluminium can disposal and the good effects on the immediate and surrounding surroundings of the National Assembly.

“As this country’s Federal lawmaking body, we hope this project will contribute to driving the making of circular economy-supporting legislation for single-use plastic legislation which can drastically reduce plastic pollution in Nigeria, he noted.

The proposal, according to Onuigbo, will allow for the inclusion of circular economy/climate literacy programs in the country’s curricula at all levels.

He said that in most cases, it will lead to behavioural changes by altering those already present, who will then seek accountability from others through monitoring.
