Malawian authorities have said that at least six people have died and four injured from last week’s flash floods in the central part of the country.

The development comes a year after Cyclone Freddy tore through Malawi and neighbouring Mozambique and Madagascar, killing more than 500 people, mostly Malawians. More than 14,000 people have been affected in the latest bout of floods, the government agency said, adding that those displaced were sheltering in camps.

The country’s Department of Disaster Management Affairs said in a statement on Tuesday that many places affected by the floods are still inaccessible due to the extensive damage caused to roads and other infrastructure.

This also has hampered the delivery of aid, it said, with humanitarian workers mostly relying on boats to reach affected areas.

The agency has appealed for more help from individuals, companies, and aid organizations to support the government’s efforts to provide relief.

Story was adapted from Reuters.
