The Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) says that at least six persons have been killed following a windstorm that destroyed houses in Kafinhausa, one of the local governments in the state on Tuesday, July 12.

This is not the first time windstorm is wreaking havoc in Jigawa, a state in Nigeriaโ€™s northwest region. In June, a seven-year-old boy was reported killed and at least seven people injured after a windstorm wreaked havoc in Jahun and Gwiwa LGAs in the state. As many as 100 houses were reportedly destroyed in the aftermath.

Recently, several communities across the four regions in Nigeria are reported to have been affected by windstorms which have destroyed lives, and livelihoods and displaced thousands of people.

Recall that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) had in June, warned of heavy rainfall and possible flooding across states in the country, particularly in the Southern region.

In April, over 463 houses were destroyed and1,326 households were affected after a windstorm wreaked havoc in three local government areas in Cross River State, including Obudu, Yala, and Ogoja.

In June, four persons have been killed, with several others injured after a windstorm wreaked havoc on the Hashimeri ward of Damaturu, Yobe State. No fewer than 35 houses were destroyed in the aftermath of the incident.

In the same month, at least three people were reported killed and over 2,250 houses destroyed after a windstorm hit five local governments in Kano State, including Rano, Kibiya, Doguwa, Danbatta and Kiru.

Reacting to the latest incidence, ExecutiveSecretary of SEMA, Yusuf Sani said that 65 residents of the community sustained injuries, adding that they have since been taken to the General Hospital in Kafinhausa area of the state.

He explained that personnel of SEMA and theNational Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) are in the area assessing the level of damage, adding that those who were displaced by the windstorm are currently taking refuge with relatives.

โ€œOur agency is currently assessing the level of destruction by the windstorm and also working to provide temporary shelter for the victims,โ€ he was quoted as saying.
