UNCC boss says new mechanism provides key tool for countries to meet climate goals

The Executive Secretary of the United Nations Climate Change (UNCC), Simon Stiell has said that the full operationalization of the ‘Article 6.4 mechanism’, as established in the Paris Agreement, is key to helping countries unlock the goals set out in their climate action plans.

The Paris Agreement’s Article 6 outlines ways that nations might voluntarily work together to meet the emission reduction and adaptation goals outlined in their national climate action plans. The Article 6.4 Mechanism, a tool to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote sustainable development, is one of these strategies. The Supervisory Committee is in charge of this system.

Speaking to the Supervisory Body at their meeting last week in Bonn, Stiell said that the mechanism offers the private sector a chance to contribute to the creation and use of clean technologies, which are essential to reaching carbon neutrality by the middle of the century.

“Stakeholders and Parties are looking to your work and are expecting to have a robust mechanism operationalized under the UNFCCC process to help reach the goals set in Paris,” he said, adding that “it was critical to set standards that ensure the highest level of environmental integrity, and I would underscore that environmental integrity is essential.”
