The rehabilitation of flood victims in Anambra State has begun under the auspices of UNICEF.

A three-month medical outreach programme in ten local government areas of the state that were affected by the flood of 2022 was launched by the organization yesterday.

Dr. Obianuju Okoye, the Reproductive Health Coordinator in the Anambra State Ministry of Health, explained to journalists during the program’s introduction in the Onitsha North Local Government Area that the programme was a collaboration between the Anambra State government and UNICEF.

“We’re carrying out a three months medical outreach of flood-affected areas. There are 10 Local Government areas in all. We have 21 health facilities we are using as a hub from where we distribute medicals to various wards.

“This is fully sponsored by UNICEF, and Anambra State is providing the manpower for the programme. It’s an integrated approach, and we are checking and giving care to HIV, and cervical cancer patients. We are also diagnosing and treating victims for various other ailments.”

According to Okoye, among the rural residents who had received care, several had been diagnosed with peptic ulcer disease, malaria parasites, pain, hypertension, and diabetes.

Late last year, UNICEF visited the areas of the state affected by floods to examine the damage and to develop plans for helping flood victims with medical care, water projects, and lavatory facilities.
