The World Bank in collaboration with Agro-Climate Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes has earmarked $2, 252,000 (N3.8 billion) as part of efforts to address the challenges of climate change and land degradation in Yobe State.

The W’Bank-assisted project has four components, including climate-smart agriculture and the community revolving fund (CRF) scheme. Unveiling the scheme’s implementation at the Local Government Project Management Committee workshop, yesterday, in Damaturu, The State’s Project Coordinator of ACReSAL, Shehu Mohammed, disclosed: “The $2.3 million is not a grant, but an investment scheme to improve modern agricultural practices among farmers.”

He noted that farmers’ smart agricultural practices could mitigate climate change in the council areas. He stated that the World Bank loans would be disbursed to groups of farmers in the council areas affected by climate change, including desertification and perennial floods.

Highlighting the project’s implementation, the State Coordinator said: “The capacity-building workshop was to equip you with skills and other knowledge required to guide the communities appropriately in ensuring climate mitigation and farmers’ resilience.”

Besides the skills acquisition, he noted that the disbursement of loans to 101 farming communities followed the successful implementation of the recovery of loans from the 10 piloted communities. He urged the project management committees of the councils to ask questions and share experiences to gain a clearer understanding of the implementation.
