The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has emphasized the value of interventions supported by stakeholders in order to reduce flooding incidents across the country.

At a one-day program for farmers and extension agents on the causes, consequences, and mitigation of flooding organized by the Anambra State Ministry of Agriculture, Chinyere Ihedioha, an assistant chief agricultural officer at the Federal Ministry of Agriculture said that deforestation, severe persistent rainfall and infiltration capacity were among the causes of flood across the country.

He explained that the goal of the occasion was to increase participants’ capacity to meet the challenge.

Members of the team who took turns to speak during the program called for needed support services for communities suffering the consequences of floods every year to relocate permanently, calling for increased awareness among the people on the efficiency of tree planting in preventing floods.

Earlier in his address, Dr Foster Ihejiofor, the State Commissioner for Agriculture, said that the program would not have come at a better time than now that states were only beginning to recover from the devastating impacts of flooding.

He advised participants to apply the knowledge they learned to make positive changes.

Story was adapted from VON.
