Microsoft launches climate research initiative

Microsoft has announced that it is launching a new research initiative which is aimed at fighting climate change.

According to an announcement on Wednesday, the company said that the Microsoft Climate Research Initiative (MCRI) aims to harness the tech giant’s research and computing expertise as it collaborates with academic institutions.

Among other things, MCRI will feature a community of researchers working across disciplines in areas beyond traditional computer science, such as environmental science, chemistry, and a variety of engineering disciplines.

Microsoft said that it is focused on three critical areas in climate research where computational advances can drive key scientific transformations, including Overcoming constraints to decarbonization, reducing uncertainties in carbon accounting, and assessing climate risks in more detail.

The company announced that it has a range of environmental initiatives and has set a goal of becoming carbon negative by 2030.
